This program provides an opportunity to network with faculty researchers across the state while engaging in a Team Science professional development experience.

When catastrophic events like hurricanes, floods, and fires hit an area, how do communities respond?  When economic crises or war overcome a nation, what is the resulting turmoil and how is recovery undertaken? How do people, ecosystems, and infrastructure weather these various storms and persevere?

Individuals and systems have the potential to be resilient in the face of disaster. The impact of these disruptions to the natural order depends on many factors, as does the propensity to be adaptive and able to adjust in new circumstances. The answers to questions surrounding resilience amidst disaster cannot be undertaken by isolated experts. What will need to be leveraged are the perspectives, approaches, and connections of a diverse set of researchers and stakeholders spanning disciplines and professions to address such challenges.

This program, facilitated by members of the Florida Research Development Alliance (FL-RDA), aims to fill gaps in support, tools, and collaborative connections across the state of Florida around the topic of disaster resilience. This is accomplished by assisting faculty researchers to create inter-institutional, research-oriented teams interested in addressing important societal needs and forthcoming challenges related to the program theme. This work builds on prior successful collaboration initiatives conducted by FL-RDA, including the first Germination program and the COLLABORATE FL-RDA series.

This teaming initiative will be achieved through a two-stage Team Science professional development experience for faculty researchers from Florida higher education institutions. The program begins with a virtual, half-day teaming event (“Research Summit”) and continues with online, supported team and idea development (“Idea Sprint”).

This project is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) GERMINATION program to support faculty researchers teaming across the state of Florida through professional development in Team Science.

Benefits to Participants:

Program Commitment:

  • Attend a half-day, virtual “Research Summit” teaming event on Friday, January 26, 2024, tentatively scheduled for 12:00-3:30pm ET
(Note: Access to a webcam and microphone is required for participation in this virtual program.)
  • Participate in an online, guided “Idea Sprint” experience with weekly team meetings and idea development activities over 2 months, including eight weeks from February 5 through March 29, 2024 (We understand this period overlaps with Spring Break, which will be handled via scheduling within each team.)
  • Showcase your team’s ideas in a virtual “Research Symposium” in early April 2024 to enable continued networking and ideating under the topic of disaster resilience. (Scheduling for this event will be determined based on availability of program participants.)
  • Provide feedback on and reactions to the program to help with program improvement and advance the field of Team Science. (Note: Information collected through surveys and other instruments may be used for research purposes. All collected data will be secure and any personally identifiable information will remain confidential. Participation in this program requires consent into the study, but you are permitted to withdrawal from the study at any time.)

Eligibility:

  • Early-career, mid-level, and senior faculty researchers from Florida colleges and universities, specifically those whose work in some way connects to the program theme of “Disaster Resilience.”
  • Faculty who identify with diverse academic disciplines are all encouraged to apply. Interdisciplinary collaboration is a primary goal of the program.
  • Women, minorities, persons with disabilities, and individuals with other varied life experiences as well as researchers from Minority-Serving Institutions, Primarily Undergraduate Institutions, and other research-emerging institutions are especially encouraged to apply.
  • Post-doctoral scholars, students, and staff are not eligible to participate in this program.

Deadline to apply: Wednesday, January 3, 2024
